Uganda’s science minister explores Japan partnerships at Kyoto Smart City Expo

KYOTO, JAPAN: Uganda’s Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, was received by Kyoto Prefecture Vice Governor Kazuya Suzuki at the Kyoto Smart City Expo in Keihanna City on 7 October 2026.
During the visit, the Minister is holding discussions with government officials, technology stakeholders, researchers and innovation companies to explore collaboration and strategic partnerships between Uganda and Japan. The talks focus on learning from Japan’s experience in smart cities, technology development, innovation and the use of science to improve quality of life.
The Minister is also using the Expo to identify technologies, investments and knowledge that can be adapted to Uganda’s development priorities. Particular emphasis is on strengthening Uganda’s innovation ecosystem, promoting technology enterprises and building partnerships that turn scientific and technological advances into practical solutions for communities.
The engagements are part of Uganda’s push to use science, technology and innovation to drive economic growth and improve service delivery.
