Prioritize STEM, Museveni tells schools at Luwero SS Diamond Jubilee
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni urged educational institutions to prioritize Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and vocational training to equip young Ugandans with skills for a changing economy, in a message delivered on his behalf by State Minister for Finance, Planning and Economic Development (General Duties), Hon. Cissy Mulondo, at Luwero Secondary School's 60th Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Museveni's message: skills for a changing economy
Delivering the message, Mulondo said education remains central to Uganda's socio-economic transformation, citing government programmes such as Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE), alongside ongoing reforms aimed at building a skilled and adaptable workforce.
Museveni cautioned against preparing learners solely for white collar employment, stressing the importance of practical skills that enable graduates to produce goods and services. He also called for discipline, hard work, integrity and patriotism among learners.
Museveni congratulated Luwero SS on six decades of contributing to human capital development, academic excellence and character formation in the Greater Luwero region.
School marks 60 years with growth in enrollment and infrastructure
Head teacher Kato Ronald said Luwero SS currently has 1,530 students and 143 staff. The school has expanded its infrastructure, laboratories and digital learning facilities, and introduced Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) programmes in agriculture, hairdressing, welding, and fashion and design.
The school has also planted 10 acres of eucalyptus trees and is constructing a multipurpose facility. School officials appealed for support to acquire a school bus.
