C-Care IHK opens revamped outpatient wing as hospital marks 30 Years in Uganda
C-Care IHK has opened a redesigned Outpatient Department at its Namuwongo hospital, moving maternal and children's services to the ground floor and adding a pharmacy, play area and café as part of a push to make private healthcare in Uganda more accessible and less intimidating.
The launch, held this past week, coincides with the hospital's 30th anniversary in the country and represents one of its largest facility investments in recent years.
Previously, patients navigating C-Care IHK's outpatient services often had to move between floors and separate waiting areas. Under the new layout, the Women's and Children's Centres now sit on the ground floor, cutting out stairs for pregnant women, young children, older patients and anyone with mobility difficulties. Specialised clinics, an expanded pharmacy and green spaces have also been brought together in the same area.
Azhar Sundoo, CEO of C-Care Uganda, said the redesign was meant to combine clinical standards with a more human approach to care, framing it as part of the hospital's response to rising patient expectations as Kampala grows. He linked the project to lessons drawn from three decades of running the hospital, arguing that improving care requires ongoing investment in staff, technology and physical spaces rather than a one-time upgrade.
Dr Miriam Mutero Musinga, General Manager of C-Care IHK, said the project grew out of everyday feedback from patients about how stressful hospital visits can be, particularly for mothers with sick children. She said the aim was for patients to move through a visit without having to think about where to go next or how to keep a child entertained during a wait.
Hajjati Sharifah Buzeeki, Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority and guest of honour at the launch, welcomed the investment as an example of private healthcare providers supporting the city's broader health goals, calling it a contribution to better access and dignity in patient care.
C-Care Uganda, formerly known as International Medical Group and built around International Hospital Kampala and its clinics, now runs a tertiary hospital alongside 20 clinics nationwide. The company said the Namuwongo upgrade is intended to strengthen coordination between departments and support demand from a growing and increasingly health-conscious urban population.
No details were given on the cost of the renovation or on further expansion plans at other C-Care facilities.
