Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been dismissed by Bayer Leverkusen after only two Bundesliga matches in charge; the fastest managerial sacking in the league’s history.
The 55-year-old was appointed in the summer following his October exit from Old Trafford. His departure makes him the third ex-United boss to be sacked within a week, after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was shown the door at Besiktas on Thursday and Jose Mourinho parted ways with Fenerbahce on Friday.
“Nobody wanted to take this step,” Leverkusen managing director Simon Rolfes told the club’s website. “However, the past few weeks have shown that building a new and successful team with this set-up is not feasible.”
Leverkusen have picked up just one point from their opening two league games. They squandered a one-goal lead to lose 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim, then collapsed against 10-man Werder Bremen on Saturday throwing away 2-0 and 3-1 leads in a dramatic 3-3 draw.
