Our children are crying inside: Why schools must take mental health seriously
Citing the State of Uganda Population Report 2025's estimate that 22.9% of children and 24.2% of adults live with mental health conditions, parenting coach and counsellor Dickson Tumuramye warns that many learners mask serious emotional struggles behind good grades and good behaviour. He traces the pressures driving this: family breakdown, economic hardship, social media, bullying, and harsh school discipline, and calls on schools to train teachers to spot distress, make counselling genuinely accessible, tackle bullying firmly, and invest in mentorship, sports, and the arts as resilience builders. His central argument is that academic success alone is no longer an adequate measure of a school's job well done; student wellbeing has to be part of the scorecard too.
